Module 1: Learn Strategies to Strengthen Parenting

The goal of the first module is to learn strategies to strengthen parenting in order to prevent child abuse and neglect and improve the quality of child care.

Learning Objectives:  1) Participants will raise their awareness of the importance and benefits of meaningful partnerships with families. 2) Identify and describe the 5 protective factors and their role in preventing child abuse and neglect. 3) Participants will define, understand, and list methods of maintaining confidentiality. 4) Participants will define and recognize signs of child abuse and neglect and understand the role that Strengthening Families can play in its prevention.  5) Participants will list the seven program strategies and understand their importance in building the five Protective Factors.

Module 2: Link Families to Services and Opportunities

The goal of the second module is to learn strategies to link families to services and opportunities in order to prevent child abuse and neglect and improve the quality of child care.

Learning Objectives: 1) Participants will demonstrate understanding for people whose life circumstances and experiences are very different from their own. 2) Participants will define “Active Listening” and give examples of both positive and negative communication techniques. 3) Participants will identify how facilities can provide opportunities for staff to get to know parents and for parents to get to know each other and develop mutual support systems. 4) Participants will design a plan to value and support parents of the children in their care.

Module 3: Facilitate Friendships and Mutual Support

The goal of the third module is to learn strategies to facilitate friendships and mutual support in order to prevent child abuse and neglect and improve the quality of child care.

Learning Objectives: As a result of this training participants will: 1) demonstrate an understanding of the value of making connections with parents and helping them to make connections with each other. 2) identify 3 major reasons why people participate in groups and activities and apply those reasons to child care facilities. 3) demonstrate the importance of offering a welcoming space in making the shift from a children-centered to family-centered facility. 4) design a plan to strengthen and facilitate friendships and mutual support among the parents of the children in their care.

Module 4: Facilitate Children’s Social and Emotional Development

The goal of the fourth module is to learn strategies to facilitate children’s social and emotional development in order to prevent child abuse and neglect and improve the quality of child care.

Learning Objectives: As a result of this training, participants will: 1) establish a framework for identifying a child’s strengths and talents, and help parents do the same. 2) use art activities to encourage children’s social and emotional expression. 3) establish a framework for identifying a child’s temperament and provide support for the particular types of temperament. 4) design a plan to facilitate healthy social and emotional development of the children in their care.

Module 5: Strengthen Parenting

The goal of the fifth module is to learn strategies to strengthen parenting in order to prevent child abuse and neglect and improve the quality of child care.

Learning Objectives: As a result of this training, participants will: 1) learn about the 3 styles of communication and practice “win-win” methods of guidance. 2) facilitate understanding of developmental milestones and support parents through all phases of their children’s development.       3) design a plan to strengthen the parents of the children in their care.

Module 6: Link Families to Services and Opportunities

The goal of the sixth module is to learn strategies to link families to services and opportunities in order to prevent child abuse and neglect and improve the quality of child care.

Learning Objectives: As a result of this training, participants will 1) review the standards of ethical behavior in early childhood care and education and understand the importance of confidentiality when working with children and their families. 2) create a framework for the process of connecting families to opportunities and services. 3) create a formal intake and assessment process upon enrollment, and help parents identify, reach and review goals on a regular basis. 4) design a plan to link families to services and opportunities.

Module 7: Respond to Family Crise

The goal of the seventh module is to learn strategies to respond to family crises in order to prevent child abuse and neglect and improve the quality of child care.

Learning Objectives: As a result of this training, participants will: 1) identify and practice skills that will encourage open communication in times of family crises. 2) identify signs of parent and child stress, invite conversation, and offer support that will link families to the services they need. 3) design a plan to respond to family crises.

Module 8: Observe & Respond to Early Warning Signs of Child Abuse or Neglect

The goal of the eigth module is to learn strategies to observe and respond to early warning signs in order to prevent child abuse and neglect and improve the quality of child care.

Learning objectives: As a result of the training, participants will: 1) define child abuse and neglect and discuss its causes, effects and prevention strategies. 2) identify early warning signs that could signal a family needs additional help. 3) learn about reporting child abuse and neglect and the priority guidelines of the Department for Children and Families which guide their response. 4) design a plan to observe and respond to early warning signs of child abuse and neglect.
