An invitation from the
Vermont Association for the Education of Young Children (VTAEYC)
You may be aware of NAEYC’s Power to the Profession initiative at the national level which is seeking to answer questions about the early care and education (ECE) workforce, such as: How do we define ourselves? What do we all hold ourselves accountable for? What helps us to make a stronger case for public funding? As Power to the Profession has wrestled with these questions, they have invited feedback from the field and from NAEYC’s state affiliates.
As a state affiliate, VTAEYC wants to make sure that the Vermont ECE workforce has the opportunity to join this conversation—both to provide feedback to the national level AND to gauge the will within our state for advancing the profession and eliminating the fragmentation that currently exists. Between October 2018 and May 2019, VTAEYC has set an ambitious goal of engaging 1000 individuals in this conversation, specifically those who work directly with children on a daily basis—teachers, assistant teachers, center directors, and home providers.
Across all regions of the state, VTAEYC is providing facilitators to convene groups, share a bit of information and then engage participants in sharing their thoughts and views, their hopes and concerns, about what it might mean to become a more cohesive, recognized profession. Webinar versions of the conversations will also be available to ensure broad access. Every two months throughout the project, follow-up surveys will go out asking participants to respond with their perspectives. In June 2019, a summary of what VTAEYC has learned from participants will be shared broadly with the ECE field and used to guide next steps.
