Laurel BongiornoWhat's the Relationship between NAEYC Accreditation and STARS?

Laurel Bongiorno, President-Elect, VAEYC

As President-Elect of VAEYC, I attended a full day seminar about the new Accreditation requirements early in 2006.  Then, in November 2006, I became a member of the STARS Oversight Committee.  My motivation for these two actions was to learn more about quality initiatives in the state of Vermont and how they relate to one another.

I’ve learned that STARS is a Recognition Program.  Its purpose is to get programs for children to think about quality and about quality improvement.  Vermonters realize that national accreditation programs require time, commitment, and outstanding quality to complete the process.  STARS allows new and growing programs to move up on the ladder from the beginning, with the hope of moving from one star all the way to national accreditation.
So, if you’re at the beginning of the STARS ladder, identify ways to improve the quality of your program. Keep moving up that ladder.  If you need a mentor to help you with this, contact Sonja Raymond, VAEYC's Accreditation Coordinator.

Keep improving your program’s quality to give Vermont’s children the best!  And, keep your eye on Accreditation.
